Beautiful Thursday night for round one of bracket play. Doggos in the lot, club music dialed in just right, and the brackets ran on separate courts for the first time this spring. The seeding is the only thing left to play for. One more seeding Thursday and the May 28 championship Thursday, and the double-elimination tournament rewards every seed you can climb between now and then.
Nine of the ten A-bracket teams showed up. Seven of the thirteen B-bracket teams did. Almost half of the B bracket sat home on a perfect cornhole night, and that hurts because every game between now and the May 28 championship changes your seed. Scoreholio caught a couple of accidental doubles in the round generation tonight, but the official results are clean and locked.
Who we missed
Seven teams sat out. Born Fish was out sick on the A side. Chas and Mary pick up a 0-4 for the week. The B bracket got hit hardest. Corny Bastards, Tossin’ Turtles, Nuthin Butt Holes, We thought the sign said Corndogs, and Mother Shuckers all missed round one. Hole Patrol still MIA, as they have been all season. Two Thursdays left. The second is the championship. Get out here.
Top 3 of the A Bracket
Splash Bros. went 4-0 with 87 points and a +74 differential. Charles and Dutty are now 32-0 on the spring and the only team with zero losses in the entire league. Their teachers, Crackle & Pop, were the last team to go 28-0 in a regular season and 28-0 through the playoffs, back in Spring 2024. One more seeding Thursday and the championship to see if Charles and Dutty match the only perfect run in nine seasons of MLCL.
DEEZ NUTS went 3-1 with 82 points and a +44 differential. Brandon and Ray’s only loss came in round two against These Effin’ Guys, which they returned the favor on by the final round.
These Effin’ Guys went 2-2 with 72 points and a +6 differential. Bill and Mike took down both top-three teams they faced. The 29-5 over Bagstreet Boys and the 23-16 over DEEZ NUTS on the same night put them on the top side of the A-bracket middle.
Top 3 of the B Bracket
Department of Bagriculture went 3-1 with 87 points and a +50 differential. Justin and Trevor put up the highest point total of the night in either bracket. Last week, Justin missed the A-bracket cut by two wins after spending the regular-season finale breaking in new boards instead of practicing on them. This week the boards came alive.
Ginger ash tornado went 3-1 with 83 points and a +29 differential. Paul opened with the 23-1 demolition of Barnyard Baggers, then took down Department of Bagriculture 21-18 to hand them their only loss of the night.
Back to Black went 3-1 with 78 points and a +8 differential. Tim and M&M’s 22-20 over Barnyard Baggers in the back half of the night was one of two 2-point finishes in the bracket.
A Bracket match summaries
Eighteen games on the A side. Both shutouts of the night came here, and only one A-bracket game ended within ten points. The seeded field plays at seeded-field pace.
Splash Bros. walked through the A bracket. Charles and Dutty opened with 21-2 over Fairways, then 23-2 over Bagstreet Boys, 22-8 over Baggin Dragons, and a 21-1 closer over Your Hole is My Goal. Eighty-seven points scored, thirteen allowed. Same Splash Bros. as every other week this spring.
DEEZ NUTS took the night’s only loss-to-These-Effin’-Guys-then-revenge story. Brandon and Ray opened with 21-3 over Lucky Sacks, dropped 16-23 to These Effin’ Guys, then cruised 21-7 past Air Mail and closed the night with a 24-5 statement over These Effin’ Guys in the rematch. Bill and Mike got the round-two upset; Brandon and Ray got the last word.
These Effin’ Guys beat both top-three opponents they faced and lost to the two they should not have. Bill and Mike took Bagstreet Boys 29-5 and DEEZ NUTS 23-16, then lost 15-21 to Fairways and 5-24 to DEEZ NUTS in the rematch. A 2-2 night that felt like both 4-0 and 0-4 depending on which two games you watched.
Air Mail went 2-2 and delivered one of the two shutouts of the night, 23-0 over Lucky Sacks. Ryan and Brandon dropped the opener 12-22 to Your Hole is My Goal, beat Baggin Dragons 22-6, then ate a 7-21 from DEEZ NUTS to close.
Bagstreet Boys ate the night’s two biggest deficits to start. Anthony and Brian lost 5-29 to These Effin’ Guys and 2-23 to Splash Bros., then flipped the night with a 25-6 over Fairways and the other shutout of the night, 21-0 over Baggin Dragons.
Your Hole is My Goal went 2-2. Greg and Mark opened 22-12 over Air Mail, took the 3-22 revenge loss from Fairways right after, then 25-3 over Lucky Sacks before the 1-21 closer against Splash Bros. Five teams in the A bracket finished 2-2.
Fairways were on the wrong end of two of those blowouts. Ray and Gary lost 2-21 to Splash Bros. to open and 6-25 to Bagstreet Boys in the middle. The two wins, a 22-3 over Your Hole is My Goal and a 21-15 over These Effin’ Guys, came back-to-back and saved the night.
Lucky Sacks drew the toughest 4-game sheet in the A bracket and finished 1-3. Justin’s lone win was a 21-1 over Baggin Dragons. The other three games were 3-21 to DEEZ NUTS, 3-25 to Your Hole is My Goal, and the 0-23 shutout to Air Mail. Toughest sheet of the night.
Baggin Dragons got the full A-bracket welcome. Kristen and Jessica went 0-4 with 15 points across four games, including the 21-0 shutout from Bagstreet Boys. They were appalled they made the A bracket in the first place, and the bracket let them know how appalled it was right back. They have Barnyard Baggers to thank for the Vegas trip and Department of Bagriculture to thank for breaking in new boards at the wrong moment. The seed is theirs. The night was not.
B Bracket match summaries
Fourteen games on the B side. All four close finishes of the night came here, including two 2-point thrillers. Four teams finished 3-1 within fourteen points of each other. The skill gap closes the most down here.
Department of Bagriculture ran the B bracket. Justin and Trevor opened 22-6 over Natural Corn Killers, lost 18-21 to Ginger ash tornado, then 26-7 over Back to Black and 21-3 over Corndoggs to close. Eighty-seven points scored on the night, the same total as Splash Bros. in the A bracket.
Ginger ash tornado matched the 3-1 with the only loss to Natural Corn Killers, a 23-18 in round three. Paul opened with 23-1 over Barnyard Baggers, took the upset over Department of Bagriculture 21-18, and closed 21-12 over Corndoggs.
Back to Black opened 24-8 over Corndoggs and 25-16 over Shuck Your Cornhole, took the 7-26 from Department of Bagriculture, then closed with the 22-20 thriller over Barnyard Baggers that was one of the two closest games of the night.
Natural Corn Killers opened with the 6-22 to Department of Bagriculture and then ran three straight: 21-14 over Corndoggs, 23-18 over Ginger ash tornado, and 23-4 over Shuck Your Cornhole. The 23-18 over Ginger ash tornado was the only loss the 3-1 leaders took on the night.
Barnyard Baggers went 1-3 with both losses by two points. Haylee played with a sub while Krista is still celebrating in Vegas. The lone win was 22-20 over Shuck Your Cornhole, sandwiched by 20-22 to Back to Black and 1-23 to Ginger ash tornado to open and 6-21 to Shuck Your Cornhole in the rematch to close. Four points across two games was the difference between 3-1 and 1-3.
Shuck Your Cornhole got the round-four save. James opened 0-3 with 16-25 to Back to Black, 20-22 to Barnyard Baggers, and 4-23 to Natural Corn Killers, then took the 21-6 rematch against Barnyard Baggers to close the night on a W.
Corndoggs finished 0-4 with Caitlyn solo. The four losses came in order: 8-24 to Back to Black, 14-21 to Natural Corn Killers, 3-21 to Department of Bagriculture, and 12-21 to Ginger ash tornado. The point totals climbed as the rounds went, which is something.
A note from the parking lot
Bottles and cups are showing up around the boards again. Throw them out at Freddy J’s or in the trash by the boards on your way through. Kneble’s Auto opens the lot back up Friday morning, and stray plastic on the asphalt gets into tires and around the lift bays. We keep the lot clean, we keep the league here.
Freddy J’s specials
One dollar wings and two dollar Yuenglings every Thursday at Freddy J’s Bar and Kitchen. Buckets of High Noon, Stateside, Surfside, and beer on the menu. The kitchen is open the whole time we are on the boards, so pace yourself between rounds. Games wrap around 9, and the late-night happy hour kicks in right after. Half the league finished the night at the bar trading B-bracket scenarios over wings. Bracket play is when the bar gets loudest.
Sponsors
Thanks to Freddy J’s Bar and Kitchen and Kneble’s Auto Service Center for the lot, the boards, the bar, and one more Thursday before the May 28 championship.

Looking ahead
Week 9 is Thursday, May 21 at 7 PM. Last of the four guaranteed games before the double-elimination championship on Thursday, May 28. Bracket seeds get locked Thursday night. Reminder for bracket play: substitutes are not allowed unless your opponent agrees to it. If your teammate cannot make it, ask the team you are playing. If they say no, you can ghost the bag (throw your bags and your partner’s bags solo) or take the loss for that round. The B bracket seed is wide open with four teams tied at 3-1. Show up.
