Last Thursday started like any other night in the lot. Squirrels, dogs, and seventeen teams of people spread across four courts, the boards full and the lawn chairs out. Then the mist showed up, and it turned out to be the great equalizer.
The two closest games of the night both happened once the boards started getting slick. The first and second cumulative teams in the league each had to grind out a two-point finish. Splash Bros. survived a 22-20 against DEEZ NUTS. DEEZ NUTS got the other 21-19 over BagStreet Boys. Wet bags, wet boards, and suddenly the gap between the top three teams felt a lot smaller than the standings have been suggesting. The mist did the same thing back in Week 2. The weather has now equalized this league twice in six weeks.
Then the mist turned into actual rain. Around 8:30 we called it. First time in nine seasons of Mays Landing Cornhole League history that we have ever cut a week short for weather. We got lucky on the timing too. Moments after the boards got packed up, the torrential downpour rolled in. Another round and half the league would have been swimming back to their cars. The Week 6 makeup happens this Thursday before Week 7 kicks off. Outside of the weather, the night was still a lot of fun.
Who we missed
Six teams sat the night out. Tossin’ Turtles, Corny Bastards, Nuthin Butt Holes, We thought the sign said Corndogs, Mother Shuckers, and Hole Patrol all picked up 0-4 records for the week. Hole Patrol is now six for six on missing Thursdays this season. Laura and Steph, the chair is still warm. Hope to see most of you at the makeup Thursday.
Top 3 Teams of the Week
Two teams ran the table 3-0 before the rain hit, and a third extended the only undefeated season streak still alive in the league. Order on the leaderboard came down to total points scored.
- Fairways (3-0, 79 points, +60 differential). Ray and Gary opened by dropping 30 on These Effin’ Guys, the highest single-game total of the night. Then a 25-0 shutout of Back to Black. Then a 24-1 win over Barnyard Baggers. Loudest 3-0 of the night and a strong follow up to last week’s called shot.
- Born Fish (3-0, 66 points, +56 differential). Chas and Mary went 22 and out three games in a row. 22-0 over Ginger ash tornado. 22-2 over Baggin Dragons. 22-8 over Natural Corn Killers. Quiet, clinical, no drama. They’ve lost both Splash Bros. matchups this spring by 18 or more, and they’re 13-2 in everything else. This week they avoided Splash Bros. and climbed from ninth to eighth in the cumulative.
- Splash Bros. (2-0, 47 points, +27 differential). Charles and Dutty are now 22-0 on the season after a 25-0 shutout of Shuck Your Cornhole and a 22-20 finish against DEEZ NUTS that was the first close game they have played all spring. Story of the night, more in a minute.
Week 6 match summaries
Twenty three games across four courts. Fifteen of them ended with a margin of fifteen points or more, that’s 65 percent. Four shutouts. Only two games finished within five points. Both two-point margins. Both involving DEEZ NUTS.
Splash Bros. finally got tested. Charles and Dutty are brand new to the league this spring and have been winning by an average of seventeen points per game since opening night. They opened on dry boards with the 25-0 shutout of Shuck Your Cornhole, pushing their record to 21-0. Then the mist started. Then they ran into DEEZ NUTS and the league got the matchup it has been circling for weeks. Splash Bros. 22, DEEZ NUTS 20. Two-point margin. First time all spring that the season-long undefeated team has had to grind one out. They are 22-0. In nine seasons of this league, only one team has ever made it through a full regular season and championship without losing. Crackle & Pop did it last fall. Splash Bros. have two regular season weeks left to keep the streak alive. The standings are starting to sort themselves at the top, but it could still be anyone’s season if someone can find a way to take down Charles and Dutty.
DEEZ NUTS got the other close game of the night first, and got a piece of revenge with it. Brandon and Ray opened with a 21-19 finish over BagStreet Boys, the only loss of the night for the second-place team. Two weeks ago in Round 3 of Week 4, BagStreet Boys hung 23 on Brandon’s 2. That was the signature game of the season and the moment the cumulative second-place jersey changed hands. The wet boards Thursday let DEEZ NUTS answer it. Then they ran into Splash Bros. and dropped a 22-20 of their own. 1-1 on a night where both close games had their fingerprints on them.
BagStreet Boys recovered from the DEEZ NUTS opener with a vengeance. Anthony cruised past Your Hole is My Goal 22-3, then shut out Corndoggs 24-0 to finish 2-1 with the third-best differential of the night.
Your Hole is My Goal closed the strongest. Greg and Mark beat Baggin Dragons 25-7 to open, ate the BagStreet Boys 3-22 game in the middle, then dropped a 24-1 statement on Air Mail in Round 3 to finish 2-1.
These Effin’ Guys took the opening 18-30 from Fairways, then turned around and put up a 21-2 over Department of Bagriculture and a 26-12 over Ginger ash tornado. Bill and Mike 2-1.
Air Mail had two of their cleanest games of the season followed by their worst of the spring. Ryan beat Natural Corn Killers 21-9, then shut out Lucky Sacks 22-0. Then Your Hole is My Goal returned the favor in Round 3, 24-1. Air Mail 2-1.
Lucky Sacks split. Justin and Jack opened 23-6 over Back to Black, then ran straight into the Air Mail shutout. 1-1 on the night before the rain.
Natural Corn Killers had their best game of the season. Tim and Nikki put up 28 in a 28-6 opening win over Corndoggs, the second-highest point total of any game on the boards. Then they dropped two to Air Mail and Born Fish. 1-2.
Department of Bagriculture put up their own season high. Justin and Trevor opened with a 27-3 demolition of Barnyard Baggers, then ran into the These Effin’ Guys and Baggin Dragons buzzsaws back to back. 1-2.
Baggin Dragons got their lone win in Round 3. Kristen and Jessica took two early losses to Your Hole is My Goal and Born Fish, then beat Department of Bagriculture 21-8 to avoid the empty-handed night.
Barnyard Baggers found their one in the middle round. Haylee and Krista lost the bookends to Department of Bagriculture and Fairways, then put up 23-4 over Ginger ash tornado in between. More on Barnyard Baggers in a minute.
Corndoggs grabbed one over Shuck Your Cornhole 22-16, the only game of the night that was neither close nor a true blowout. Caitlyn and Victoria 1-2.
Ginger ash tornado, Back to Black, and Shuck Your Cornhole could not find a win between them. Paul went 0-3 with all three losses by 14 or more. M&M took two losses including the 25-0 to Fairways. James went 0-2 against Splash Bros. and Corndoggs.
Congrats to the Huettls
Special shoutout to Barnyard Baggers this week. Krista and Chuck are getting married in Las Vegas this weekend, and Krista’s daughter Hailey is along for the trip. Big weekend for that family. Congrats to all three of you. The whole league is happy for you.
Barnyard Baggers will be away for the rest of Week 6 and all of Week 7. They will be back for the final regular season Thursday on May 14.
Freddy J’s
Dollar wings and two dollar Yuenglings every Thursday at Freddy J’s Bar and Kitchen. Buckets of High Noon, Stateside, Surfside, and beer on the menu, plus the late night happy hour that kicks in around 9 when the boards wrap. Last Thursday it kicked in early thanks to the rain, and the back bar was packed by 8:45. Win or lose, dry or soaked, half the league still ends up inside afterward going line by line through the standings.

Barnyard Baggers will be in Las Vegas. Everyone else, see you in the lot.
